About Barker Shoes
Barker Shoes has been a British tradition for 140 years. The uppers are hand-formed using only the most carefully selected leathers. Many other traditional shoemaking methods are still used, including slow natural drying and polishing. That’s why Barker Shoes English shoes have unique qualities that no machine can match. Barker has been manufacturing shoes in the Northamptonshire village of Earls Barton since 1880. In an ever-changing world, it’s nice to know you can still find the perfect product.

heritage
In 1880, an enterprising Northamptonshire bootmaker laid the foundation for the Barker brand in a humble cottage in the heart of England’s shoe industry.

Arthur Barker Shoes (Arthur Barker) was a skilled craftsman and natural innovator who became highly sought after for his waterproof spike boots (the nails expanded when wet, making the soles waterproof). Unable to meet the growing demand, he hired other craftsmen from surrounding villages to fulfill his growing orders. With a keen eye for the future and shrewd timing, Barker Shoes invested in factories at the turn of the century and later won a contract to supply boots to the British Army during World War I.

During the interwar period, the Barker Shoes brand continued to evolve as Arthur’s three sons joined the family business, taking the brand into new markets and territories. In 1947, a new factory was built in Earls Barton to produce women’s shoes, and in 1950 an independent sales company was established to sell directly to retailers.

Why are Barker Shoes so great?
One thing is for sure, craftsmanship and quality materials make for good shoes. At Barker Shoes, there’s no shortage of both. Barker Shoes artisans produce approximately 200,000 pairs of hand-sewn shoes each year.

What should Barker Shoes do?
In 1987, Barker Shoes built a new factory and offices using local Northamptonshire masonry. It is now one of the finest shoe factories in Europe, situated on 4.5 acres of landscaped grounds in the heart of the village of Earls Barton. The site is just a few hundred yards from the original 1880 site. Barker Shoes operates a highly skilled local workforce within the UK footwear industry.

The factory was designed to produce fine British shoes. Every part is customized to achieve this goal. For example, good natural light is a major requirement for leather grading, color matching and consistently good stitching, so the environment is arranged to provide this.
